Femme in STEAM is excited to announce that we will be hosting our very first Speaker Series on September 12 from 11AM-7PM ET! For this panel, we offer a wide range of volunteer speakers that will be discussing topics from working in a STEAM field to college life and more! Not only will you be able to gain valuable knowledge from these experienced speakers, but you will also be able to participate in networking and workshop sessions as well. Our Speakers
JENNY SIVIE
Director of Marketing, Technology, and Data Analytics
Jenny Sivie, LEED AP BD+C, holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Texas at Dallas and a MBA from the University of Dallas. Ms. Sivie is Director of Marketing, Technology, and Data Analytics for the Air Distribution division of Johnson Controls. She works with the sales and marketing teams and customers to define, create, and implement a technology roadmap with a focus on ease of doing business. During her 24 years in the HVAC industry she has always been lucky enough to work at the intersection of technology, products, marketing, and sales allowing her to fuel her passion for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). She is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and is a LEED Accredited Professional specializing in Building Design + Construction. She is also a member of the University of Texas at Dallas’ Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science Executive Council. Ms. Sivie also actively works with girls of all ages to encourage them to become curious about STEM and STEM careers.
KELLY WRITER
Environmental Engineer
Kelly is an Environmental Engineer and Director of EPA-RTP's Community Engagement and STEM Education Program. Kelly initiated the Program in 2003 to increase communication of EPA science to students, educators, and the public with the goal of increasing the public’s knowledge on how protecting the environment protects human health. Kelly focuses on STEM outreach in low-income schools (i.e., 50%+ free/reduced lunch) to help close the opportunity gap and build capacity for a more diverse workforce. She especially enjoys sharing hands-on activities that communicate EPA science (e.g. the health benefits of Ecosystems and GENERATE: The Game of Energy Choice) with students of all ages to increase their awareness of how they can make a difference in protecting the environment and human health.
Alexis M. Scott-Boster
Educator, Entrepreneur, and Engineer
Alexis M. Scott-Boster is a Triple E: Educator, Entrepreneur, and Engineer. She holds a Masters of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of North Texas and Bachelors of Science Degree in Mathematics from Spelman College. She currently works at Raytheon as a Senior Principal Systems Engineer. She was instrumental in getting Raytheon Technologies listed as a Trusted Integrator for Commercial Solutions for Classified program of NSA. She has been the technical lead for a major Raytheon Program for over 7 years. For 3 years, she was the Section Manager in Dallas, TX of the Systems Security Engineering Group. She has been teaching Mathematics for over 25 years including 18 years as a college professor. She has an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Spelman College and a graduate degree in Mathematics from the University of North Texas. She founded AMS Academic Solutions to share her gift of numbers and education that she has possessed since an early age. She is a 2017 NSBE Hidden Figures Awards recipient for her contributions in STEM. She published one book in 2017 called Embracing STEM Smarts: an encouraging guide for young ladies to be bold in their intelligence. In 2019 she published volume 2 of Embracing STEM Smarts. She will have another book coming out later this year involving her work in STEM. She was honored by her Alma Mater, University of North Texas as a featured alumnus in their July 2017 newsletter. She received a Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition for her work with young women in STEM. Finally, She created the blog post called Breaking the Curse of Invisibility for Herdacity.org which was also the subject of her TedX talk (https://youtu.be/mPohBFk6SV0) in February 2018.
DAISY BISSONETTE
College Student at Princeton University
Daisy is a rising sophomore at Princeton University where she is studying astrophysics on a premed track. She went to a rural public high school and had to navigate college admissions (and the SAT) on her own. Throughout the process, she gathered a lot of knowledge about online/free resources and tips to ace standardized testing for college applications!
KATHERINE MERIFIELD
Graduate from University of Washington
Katherine just graduated from University of Washington in Seattle in June with a degree in Mathematics and CEP (Community, Environment, and Planning), and with interdisciplinary honors. She has been passionate about supporting women and non-binary people in STEM fields since high school, and for her senior project this year she created a community to connect and support women and non-binary students in STEM fields at UW. Katherine is currently taking a year to prepare for graduate school and working in a hospital to help with the Covid-19 response. She is planning to combine her interests in math, urban planning, and sustainability in the future.
SHREYA PATIL
College Student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Shreya is a rising college freshman at UIUC. She is passionate about technology, sustainability, and bridging the gender gap in the STEM field. In addition, she plans to major in computer engineering in college and possibly double-major in entrepreneurship.
TULSI PATEL
College Student at Harvard University
Tulsi is a rising sophomore at Harvard pursing a major in Computer Science and a minor in Economics. This summer, she was an Artificial Intelligence Intern at Boston Children’s Hospital. Tulsi has always been very passionate about advocating for women in STEM. In high school, she was president of the Girls Who Code club and conducted independent science research with the USDA. Currently in college, Tulsi is an associate for Harvard Undergraduate Consulting on Business and the Environment, where she helps tech and life science companies implement more eco-friendly business practices through data-driven research. On campus, she also continues to help make space for women in male-dominated industries as an active member of HU Women in Business, and enjoys staying in touch with her cultural roots through her role as Alumni Outreach Chair for the South Asian Association.
ANITA CHACKO
College Student at University of Pennsylvania
Anita Chacko is a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania. Surrounded by animals and farms in her hometown, she is a nature-enthusiast and works part-time at an environmental research lab. She hopes to commit to a career that contributes to local communities. She can't wait to meet and share her story with the Femme in STEAM scholars!
